Mike Flanagan has a proven track record of creating genuinely scary horror series (his long run at Netflix included The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass) as well as acclaimed Stephen King adaptations. So it wasn’t exactly the biggest shock to hear that his first project after signing a deal with Amazon Studios would be a series based on King’s first published novel, Carrie.
Carrie has been adapted before, most notably by Brian De Palma in the 1976 film featuring an iconic lead performance by Sissy Spacek. But Flanagan has long been promising a fresh take that won’t simply repurpose what’s come before. Flanagan made his very first appearance at San Diego Comic-Con to back that up by screening footage from Carrie, with his cast joining in for some behind-the-scenes insights. Check out the new teaser below.
Carrie stars Summer Howell as the title character, a bullied teen with a troubled home life and the added complication of burgeoning telekinetic powers. The rest of the cast includes Samantha Sloyan (as Carrie’s mother, Margaret); Siena Agudong as Carrie’s sympathetic classmate, Sue Snell; and Alison Thornton as Carrie’s mean-girl classmate, Chris Hargensen.
There’s also Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross; Josie Totah as Tina; Arthur Conti as Billy; Thalia Dudek as Emaline; Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin; and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Carrie arrives on Prime Video October 7.
