Brand New Day’ Races to the $1 Billion Mark

Just when Hollywood was on the verge of handing all the keys over to YouTube-spawned horror creators, Spider-Man came swinging back into town. What began with Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey‘s box-office surge has reached tidal-wave proportions with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which just became the second-fastest movie to reach $1 billion.

The Sony-Marvel tale took just six days to reach the milestone, Variety reports. It’s second on the billion-dollar speedway behind Avengers: Endgame, which racked up $1.2 billion in its opening weekend. Brand New Day can take some solace in the fact that it bested Endgame‘s domestic opening weekend total. But also, it can take lots of solace in the fact that making $1 billion in less than a week is pretty spectacular stuff.

So far, four movies released in 2026 are in the billionaire club: Brand New Day, of course, along with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, and Toy Story 5. As Variety notes, “The Odyssey has grossed a remarkable $912 million to date and is about to be the fifth release of 2026 to join the billion-dollar club.”

And, it goes without saying, another Avengers movie awaits in Doomsday, which could easily add itself to the list despite releasing in mid-December. Also, don’t count out Dune: Part Three, which also opens December 18 and is poised to capitalize on Odyssey-stoked IMAX fever.

Variety reminds us that 2019 featured an unprecedented nine films in the billion-dollar club (including Endgame and another Spider-Man entry, Far From Home). This year is the first since the pandemic upended the entertainment industry to boast more than three titles with that big-bucks honor.
