Wizards of the Coast Is Giving God’s Favorite Princess Her Own ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Secret Lair

It’s taken a while for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to learn what to take from the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3 a few years ago, and even then, what they’ve mostly learned to take is “merchandise the hell out of that party.” But while we wait for someone, somewhere, to think about a Baldur’s Gate 4, we’ll at least take the merchandise, especially in the form of Magic cards.

This week Wizards of the Coast announced a massive Dungeons & Dragons-themed “superdrop” for its Secret Lair platform, aptly named “Roll for Initiative.” Covering a veritable host of D&D theming, from adventure-module-inspired sets to blacklight art variants of cards from the prior Dungeons & Dragons sets for Magic, the seven-set drop also includes two Baldur’s Gate 3 sets, each based around a specific member of the smash hit game’s main party: Shadowheart the Half-Elf Cleric and Gale Dekarios the Human Wizard.

Early takes on Baldur’s Gate 3‘s motley crew previously appeared across the Adventures of the Forgotten Realms and the Battle for Baldur’s Gate Commander Legends sets, and Karlach and Astarion previously got their own Secret Lair sets as part of Dungeons & Dragons‘ 50th anniversary celebrations. So it’s nice to see more members of the party get their dues, even if it seems like it’s going to take a while (and be very pricey) to get the whole team in Secret Lair form.

Away from the city of Baldur’s Gate, the other drops feature a trio inspired by iconic Dungeons & Dragons characters and creatures, the aforementioned Blacklight variants, and a set of lands depicting iconic locations from across the Forgotten Realms.

As with all Secret Lairs lately, these are going to be incredibly hard to get when queuing opens up for them at 8 a.m. Pacific—an hour before sales begin at 9 a.m.—on February 9. And you’ll want plenty of gold out of your bag of holding, too: each set costs $30 for a standard version or $40 for a holo-foil variant, and Wizards is offering massive bundles, ranging from all seven standard drops ($200), all seven foil variants ($270), and a completionist’s combo of both for a whopping $465.
