After breaking the English-language barrier at the Oscars with Parasite (which is now on Netflix), Bong Joon-ho is back with his next film of a rather different nature.
Based on Edward Ashton’s novel, Mickey 17 is set in a dystopian world where mankind attempts to colonize another planet. Before they can do so, they need a test subject human that can be killed and then brought back to life – also known as an expendable. That unfortunate job falls to the awkward Mickey, played by Robert Pattinson.
This is a space epic mashed with black humour and political parallels and could be a hit at the cinemas. If you can’t go and see it on the big screen, we’ve rounded up everything we know about the home release of Mickey 17.
Make sure you stick around on Tech Advisor, as our review of the film will be dropping soon.
How to watch Mickey 17 now
Mickey 17 isn’t yet out in cinemas – it releases on Friday 7 March 2025. If you’re in the UK, you can get tickets from Cineworld, Vue and Odeon. Those in America can get them from AMC Theatres, Fandango and Atom Tickets.
The official trailer is below, if you’d like to know what to expect:
When could Mickey 17 be available on VOD?
The first place to watch Mickey 17 at home will probably be on digital platforms for renting and buying if previous films from Warner. Bros Discovery are anything to go by.
While timings have not been confirmed, we can estimate based on previous films from the studio, and how it’s expected to perform.
The thriller flick Companion landed on digital platforms after just 18 days, while Juror #2 and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took around a month to arrive. Joker 2 arrived after just 25 days.
Based on that, we expect that Mickey 17 will be available to watch at home sometime between 25 March and 7 April 2025 – though this is just a prediction.
Whether it arrives sooner or later depends on its box office performance. Mickey 17 isn’t expected to rack in numbers such as blockbusters like Godzilla X Kong and Dune: Part 2, but current predictions have it at bringing in around $15m – $20m domestically in the US, facing strong competition from Captain America: Brave New World.
By comparison, Companion made an estimated $9.5m in its opening weekend in the US. That’s quite good numbers for the film, as its $10m budget is significantly lower than Mickey 17’s $120 million. If Bong Joon-ho’s film isn’t a slam dunk with audiences, then Warner may want to save costs by bringing it to digital platforms sooner.
When could Mickey 17 be available to stream?
Max is Warner’s streaming platform, and will no doubt be the first platform to get Mickey 17 in the US.
Most films take around two to three months to drop on this platform after hitting cinemas, so Mickey 17 will likely drop on Max in May or June 2025.
Warner films are usually syndicated on Sky Cinema/Now in the UK and have usually arrived a little after the US debut. So, a late spring/early summer UK streaming debut for Mickey 17 seems plausible.
When could Mickey 17 be available on DVD/Blu-ray?
DVD release dates of Warner films also vary – Juror #2 and The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim took around two months after releasing digitally, while Companion will drop around a month and half after hitting platforms such as Prime Video and the Google store.
If our predicted digital release window above is accurate, then we’d expect to see physical copies of Mickey 17 available to buy anywhere between mid-May and early June 2025.
