If the finale of The Last of Us season 2 left you hungry for more zombie tales, 28 Years Later may fill that void perfectly.
More than two decades have passed since a young man played by Cillian Murphy woke up in a world where a mysterious virus has turned people into zombies. 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle, launched a series of survival horrors. However, its next instalment – 28 Weeks Later – was created by a different director. In 2025, Boyle returns to the post-apocalyptic world and intends to stay in it for longer, as 28 Years Later will launch a new horror trilogy.
Sadly, Cillian Murphy won’t appear in the movie. Although fans thought they spotted the Oscar award-winning actor in the film’s first trailer, it was, in fact, Angus Neill, starring as a zombie. 28 Years Later will also feature Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman and Emma Laird, among others.
The cinema is the best place to find out what happened 28 years after the outbreak of the mysterious epidemic. However, if you already want to know when Danny Boyle’s new film will hit home media, keep on reading.
When does 28 Years Later release in cinemas?
28 Years Later will drop in UK and US cinemas tomorrow, Friday 20 June 2025.

When could 28 Years Later be released on VOD?
At the time of writing, Sony hasn’t revealed any information on when 28 Years Later may appear on digital. However, we will try to estimate the VOD premiere date, relying on the studio’s previous film releases.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die, It Ends with Us and Venom: The Last Dance were some of Sony’s biggest hits from last year. All three movies were launched on digital 46 days after their cinematic debut. If 28 Years Later performs well at the box office, it may follow a similar path – in that scenario, the movie will arrive on VOD on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.
However, Madame Web, which severely underperformed at the box office, premiered on VOD only 30 days after debuting in cinemas. Kraven the Hunter, another comic book-based flop, needed 32 days to do so.
Therefore, if 28 Years Later bombs, it may drop on VOD earlier – roughly around Tuesday, 22 July 2025.
Based on previous Sony releases, we estimate that 28 Years Later will arrive on UK digital platforms around the same date as in the US.
Note that these dates are predictions, and Sony hasn’t confirmed any of them. When they release more information, we’ll update this article.
When could 28 Years Later be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
Physical copies of Sony’s most profitable movies often hit stores 42 days after the digital release. However, there are exceptions to that. For example, the aforementioned Bad Boys: Ride or Die appeared on DVD and Blu-ray 63 days after the premiere on VOD.
Sony’s box office flops appear on DVD and Blu-ray at a slightly different time. Copies of Madame Web arrived 46 days after its release on VOD, while copies of Kraven the Hunter arrived 49 days after.
Based on that, we expect 28 Years Later to launch on DVD and Blu-ray between Tuesday, 2 September 2025 and Tuesday, 23 September 2025.
In the UK, copies of Danny Boyle’s horror may arrive a bit later.
When could 28 Years Later be released on streaming services?
According to the agreement between Sony and Netflix, the studio’s films are released on this streaming service a minimum of 120 days after theatrical release.
Madame Web hit Netflix three months after its theatrical debut. It’s worth noting, however, that the film was a box office disappointment, which may have weighed on the decision to bring it to streaming quickly. The much more successful Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Venom: The Last Dance were released on Netflix four months after opening in cinemas.
Therefore, 28 Years Later will drop on Netflix US on Sunday, 28 September 2025 at the earliest. However, Sony may postpone that release more if the film performs well.
An agreement between Sony and Disney signed in 2021 says that after spending some time on Netflix, the studio’s films will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu. 28 Years Later, therefore, will eventually land on these two platforms – however, it hasn’t yet been announced when this may happen.
In the UK, 28 Years Later will most likely land on Sky Cinema, but it’s harder to predict this release date as patterns vary.
