WhatsApp finally comes to iPad years after Android tablets

WhatsApp has finally issued a dedicated app for iPad users.

The Meta-owned messaging company has made an iPad-specific version of its hugely popular app available on the App Store, with all of the features we’ve come to expect.

Using the app, you can sync up your WhatsApp messages between your devices using a simple QR code system. This works with both iPhone and Android smartphones.

With that done, you can enjoy all the benefits of WhatsApp, including end-to-end encrypted messages and secure video and voice calls involving up to 32 people – all free of charge.

The iPad app works seamlessly with in-built features such as Stage Manager, Split View and Slide Over, enabling you to keep your messages visible while you browse the internet, for example. It works with both the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, too.

Your message was delayed

WhatsApp had dropped a huge hint that an iPad app was nigh earlier this week when it responded to yet another request for such a basic provision with an eyes emoji.

While this is undoubtedly good news for iPad users, there’s no denying that WhatsApp/Meta has dragged its feet over this wider iOS release. As WhatsApp itself admits over on a related blog post, this was “one of our biggest requests”.

Reports emerged that the company was working on tablet versions for iOS and Android back in 2021, and it first appeared in beta form on Android tablets back in 2022. There’s been a WhatsApp iPad available for testing through TestFlight for about two years now.
