Well, Duh, Chris Evans Is Back for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Everyone can, finally, stop lying about it. Chris Evans is, in fact, returning as Steve Rogers in next year’s film, Avengers: Doomsday. News first broke of the highly anticipated return last year, and earlier this week, a leaked teaser trailer announcing the news made it all but official. Now, with Avatar: Fire and Ash in theaters everywhere and that trailer out in the world, it’s officially official. For real. Bet. Etc.

For good measure, though, io9 reached out to Marvel Studios, which confirmed Evans is indeed returning in Avengers: Doomsday. But the trailer, which has not yet been made available online in an official capacity, refers to the character as “Steve Rogers,” not “Captain America.” So there are still plenty of additional questions to be answered in the film, which is in theaters one year from today.

Questions like, which Steve Rogers is this? Are we back in time with the main one who put back the Infinity Stones, or is this another version since he’s younger? Also, the trailer reveals he’s got a baby. What’s the deal with that? Is Peggy still in the picture? Not to mention, how is everything going on with this character going to fit into a story with at least two dozen other Marvel characters? The Steve stuff alone could, and probably should, be its own movie.

That’s one side of this. The other side is how odd this whole reveal has been. Yes, most of us trusted the news last year that Evans was returning. We also saw him get a lot of enjoyment out of returning as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine. But Marvel, bless its heart, really wanted the fans to have a fun moment with this news, keeping it super secret and hoping to get one of those big, exciting, in-theater reactions.

Unfortunately, though, it’s 2025, and we can’t have nice things like that. Someone filmed it, it went online, and now, this massive news just kind of squeaks ahead.

Does Marvel have any other big news or reveals for Doomsday? More teasers are, surely, coming. But nothing is likely to top the return of one of the most famous Avengers of all, Steve Rogers.
