‘Wednesday’ Casts a Goth Icon to Play the Mysterious Aunt Ophelia

After a mountain of build-up, we’ll finally get to properly meet Morticia Addams’ sister Ophelia in season three of Wednesday. Not only that, but we know who’ll be playing her: Eva Green, whose goth bona fides include three previous Tim Burton projects (2012’s Dark Shadows, 2016’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and 2019’s Dumbo), as well as the spooky Victorian-era Showtime series Penny Dreadful.

Green is now adding Ophelia Frump to her resume, as Deadline reports. Sorry to fans who may have hoped Lady Gaga‘s Rosaline Rotwood was hiding a deeper familiar connection to Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega). As the trade reminds us, the back of Ophelia’s head—initially telegraphed by her long, blonde hair—was glimpsed at the end of Wednesday season two, thanks to a Wednesday vision that also revealed her aunt was being held prisoner by Grandmama Frump (Joanna Lumley).

Also, worrisomely, Ophelia is seen scrawling “Wednesday must die” on the wall in what looks like blood. Green is the first big name to join Wednesday season three—we had a feeling they wouldn’t just stick a pale wig on Catherine Zeta-Jones for the role—and she’ll clearly be an important figure moving forward.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum blog, Wednesday creators, writers, and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar said, “Eva Green has always brought an exhilarating, singular presence to the screen—elegant, haunting, and beautifully unpredictable. Those qualities make her the perfect choice for Aunt Ophelia. We’re excited to see how she transforms the role and expands Wednesday’s world.”

Green added, “I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of Wednesday as Aunt Ophelia. This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckoo-ness to the Addams family.”
