We Just Got a Tiny New Look at ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’

When it comes to Star Wars, even the smallest news is big news. And what follows is certainly small on the surface, but if you dig a little deeper, it could have very fun implications. So, do you want to see a new Star Wars ship?

Vanity Fair just published an interview with Shawn Levy, the co-writer and director of Star Wars: Starfighter, which is currently in production, aimed at a 2027 release date. The interview itself is pretty bare in terms of detail about the film, which stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray along with Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, and others.

However, along with a few quotes about Levy’s excitement, there is a new image to go along with it. And, if you’re a Star Wars fan, that’s noteworthy. You can see the photo in all its glory over on the Vanity Fair site, and here it is via social media.

There, you see Levy and some members of his crew on what clearly appears to be a ship. We love Star Wars ships, do we not? Unfortunately, Vanity Fair‘s description of the photo does not make clear whose ship, or what ship, it is. (“Sweater by Brunello Cucinelli; jeans by Rag & Bone; personal watch by Rolex; hair products by Living Proof; grooming products by Bioeffect,” it reads. Thanks a lot for the pertinent info.) But, of course, we want to speculate.

As this is a carefully approved publicity image from a carefully conducted early interview, there isn’t much to pull out of it. But Levy is standing inside the ship, at the top of a ramp that seems to lead outside. Around the corner is another ramp leading to another area of the ship. That means this ship has at least two levels, teasing something with potentially more size than we’re used to. This is not a “Starfighter,” nor the ship we saw in the first official image at the top of this article.

There are also grates on the floor, which one might think could be used for smuggling. We don’t think so, though. Would you really put your secret smuggling compartments right at the entrance of the ship? Of course not. No, these seem to just be vents. Is this space for storage of something?

And, of course, we can only guess whose ship this is. The easiest guess is Ryan Gosling’s character, because he’s the movie’s focus. But there’s no evidence either way. All we know is that this is a ship from Star Wars: Starfighter, and it’s important enough that Levy and crew built a set of it.

We’ll surely find out more in the coming months, and more information about the film will be revealed. It’s scheduled for release on May 28, 2027. Do you see any other details we’re missing? Let us know below.
