Last week saw 20th Century Studios dispel concerns that Alien: Romulus wasn’t getting a sequel. This weekend is Warner Bros.’ turn, as the studio wants everyone to know it isn’t forgetting to do another Wonka movie.
Recently, co-writer Simon Farnaby was interviewed by Variety, where he mentioned the sequel was impeded by Timothée Chalamet’s schedule. “He’s not sure about timing or what he wants to do next,” said Farnaby of the lead, which was then followed by Variety translating that to an indefinite delay. Once that part of the story gained traction, Farnaby took to social media to clarify his comments, saying they were taking “a little out of context.”
“I 100% didn’t say Wonka 2 wasn’t happening,” he wrote on X. “A sequel was always the plan, and everyone is working really hard on it. WB are committed. There’s a great script by Paul and I, and Timmy wants to do it (like I said!) It’s just about working out schedules and making sure it’s as fantastic as we know it can be, and these things take a little time. Very sorry for any confusion!” Warner Bros. similarly gave its own comment to Variety, stating the claims were “entirely false. The Wonka creative team is hard at work on the next chapter.”
The original Wonka was a big hit for Warner Bros. in 2023, helping it recover from Aquaman 2 fizzling out and becoming one of the year’s highest-grossing films. Between that and his headlining the Dune movies, it’s no surprise the studio would keep working with Chalamet as he guns for an Oscar. And whenever this sequel lands, it’ll have something in its favor: people will know that’s really Chalamet doing the acting, singing and a lot of the dancing, with hopefully no AI in sight.
