Venom’s Cinematic Future Is a Brand New Animated Movie

Much like his arch-nemesis, Spider-Man, Venom is about to be taken to a whole other dimension on the big screen. Sony Pictures has decided that the next Venom movie will be animated and that Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the team behind last year’s surprise hit Final Destination: Bloodlines, will direct.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the project, which does not yet have any writer attached. That means it’s very early days, so this feels like something that won’t be out until closer to 2030. Sony Pictures Animation is currently recruiting writers and taking pitches, and, according to the trade, Tom Hardy is expected to return in some capacity. Whether that’s as a producer or voice actor is unclear.

What is clear is that this is a fantastic idea. Clearly, having an animated film didn’t hurt Spider-Man, with two, and soon three, incredible feature films starring the character. We wonder if Venom could, in some way, be a part of that third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which sets up whatever this movie ends up being.

And, despite mixed reviews, audiences still turned up in a big way for 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance. The huge hit film was meant to put an end to Tom Hardy’s live-action vision of the character without him ever officially crossing over with Spider-Man. An animated film feels like a way to do what the Spider-Verse films did: give us everything audiences want storywise while also linking all the different versions together.

Of course, that’s just pure speculation. With no script and no real specifics in place, an animated Venom movie is still a long way away. Plenty of time for the very in-demand duo of Stein and Lipovsky to direct one, maybe even two, of the films they have on their plates post Bloodlines. But, it seems, they’ll eventually get their hands on Venom too.

How are we feeling about an animated Venom movie? Will it be teased in Beyond the Spider-Verse? Let us know below.
