Ridley Scott’s bloody drama set in the heart of the Roman Empire is considered one of the greatest takes on the ancient world. While Gladiator may play fast and loose with historical facts, it offers a heart-breaking story, bigger-than-life characters, and a genuinely captivating spectacle (something Scott’s Napoleon movie failed to achieve).
Nearly twenty-five years after the film premiere, Scott will take viewers back to the sandy arenas of Rome. In Gladiator 2, we won’t see Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix, stars of the original film. But don’t worry – they have worthy successors.
Paul Mescal will play Lucius, now grown-up nephew of Emperor Commodus from the original Gladiator. He will be accompanied by Pedro Pascal as General Marcus Acacius, Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta, Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla and Denzel Washington as Macrinus. Connie Nielsen will return as Lucius’ mother, Lucilla, while Derek Jacobi will again play Senator Gracchus.
