If you’ve ever been to San Diego Comic-Con, odds are that’s all of San Diego you were able to see. The convention is always so wild, busy, and packed full of things to do, you barely have time to experience a sliver of it, let alone see the rest of the city. But now, you can do just that, from the comfort of your own home, and in a very unexpected way.
Last week, Hasbro announced the Monopoly: San Diego Edition with a big event in the Southern California city. And while city-specific editions aren’t new to the popular board game, nor are hyper-specific, themed versions, we find this one extra intriguing. Mostly because we’ve been going to San Diego Comic-Con for so many years that we feel like San Diego locals but also complete novices. We only see a small sliver of a city that, this Monopoly proves, has much more to share.
But it also makes you think that going to Comic-Con is one of the best things you can do in San Diego. That’s because the Gaslamp Quarter, the section of the city Comic-Con is centered in, is this version’s Boardwalk. The most expensive and sought-after property. And, just two steps down from there, standing in for Pennsylvania Avenue, is the San Diego Convention Center itself. The site of Comic-Con. Hall H, unfortunately, does not have its own spot on the board, which you can see in full here.
What this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt is that Comic-Con fans should do more in San Diego than just go to Comic-Con. The San Diego Zoo is one of the most famous in the world. Fish tacos are so important that they get their own space. Apparently, a toy store called Geppetto’s is important enough for a space. And while we choose to avoid Sea World at all costs, we do understand its inclusion.
Our friends at the SDCC Blog brought the game to our attention, and, according to them, the game is available to purchase in San Diego at Hallmark stores, the USS Midway Museum, Broken Yolk locations, Gepetto’s in Seaport Village, and area Barnes & Noble locations. Or, if you aren’t from there and just want a tabletop vacation, it’s also on Amazon.
