The Wheel of Time’s Showrunner Talks Future Hopes After That Blistering Season 3 Finale

The Wheel of Time‘s season three finale just dropped on Prime Video, but we won’t be spoiling any plot points here. Instead, we’re frantically trying to figure out which weave will properly channel the One Power and bring a fourth season into existence.

No matter what, it’ll involve showrunner Rafe Judkins, who told io9 before the season began that he already knows how he wants to wrap up his adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy book series—with hopes of telling “the whole story.”

Now that fans have gotten to the end of season three—it’s not a spoiler to say there are some massive dangling threads left after the finale—he’s revealing a bit more about what he envisions for Wheel of Time‘s future.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Judkins admitted the finale contains “a lot of place-setting for the next season.” As of this writing, Prime Video has yet to announce season four, but Judkins already has the story wheels in motion.

“We’ve definitely laid the pieces for a few [villainous] Forsaken to appear in next season who are new and maybe not so new that you will be excited to see on screen,” he told THR. “I think I can say that much. The interplay of the Forsaken is really exciting and interesting in the books, and I think we want to continue that in the show and continue to meet new members of this group.”

If Amazon decides it wants a fourth season—well, that might not be enough, actually.

“I really want to deliver this full series,” Judkins said “[And] Amazon [feels] like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term. There’s not a lot of places doing that anymore. For Wheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave. So I am hopeful that we will get to finish this story. I think it’s a story that in many ways is important because of its length, and because it gets better as it goes.”

While Judkins believes “the books get better as they go and the show is getting better as it goes,” he’s also realistic about being part of the TV business.

“The history of television is that its strength is long-form storytelling; that you stick with it and you love these characters and you follow them through 60 to 100 hours … So I’m hopeful for our industry that shows like Wheel of Time do get to tell the whole story. I think it’s important for television. It’s what we do best and so we should be finishing these stories.”

The Wheel of Time seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Prime Video.
