One of the biggest blows for fantasy TV fans last year came with the cancellation of Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time. The news came a few months after the third season of the Robert Jordan adaptation, bringing an abrupt end to a show that had really started to hit its stride—and hadn’t yet reached its much-teased climactic battle.
But even before Amazon confirmed a fourth season was not in the cards, another expansion of Jordan’s novel series was announced: an open-world RPG game from IP owner iwot Studios. Today, we’re learning that the production company has an even bigger vision for The Wheel of Time, with talk of an animated TV series and even animated feature films.
Variety broke the news that iwot has teamed with producer Thomas Vu (Arcane, League of Legends) to “develop and produce a new video game, animated feature films, and a new animated television series” inspired by The Wheel of Time.
The trade reports Vu has a PC/mobile video game in the works that’s “aimed at broadening the franchise’s reach across platforms and engaging fans worldwide.”
As for the things we’re really intrigued by—the animated TV show and movies—there’s no word yet on where (streaming, theatrical?) those might appear. So far, the only detail is that these projects will be “targeting a young audience and [be] designed to grow the franchise’s global footprint.”
In addition, iwot told the trade that its Vu collaborations should be viewed as additions separate from “the previously announced forthcoming Wheel of Time films, including 3D feature The White Tower and director Kari Skogland’s live-action movie Age of Legends, and the open-world AAA RPG video games iwot Studios currently has in development at iwot Games Montréal.”
Jordan did pen over a dozen Wheel of Time books, so there’s indeed a lot of material to draw upon. But seeing as how the Prime Video show was cancelled because its viewership wasn’t enough to justify the high cost of another season, here’s hoping there’s enough demand that these new projects don’t meet a similar fate.
