Fans are already so hyped for the return of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and the gang in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, they probably didn’t need to see any more footage. But Nintendo decided it needed one final trailer to dial the mushroom-munching, fireball-firing excitement up another notch. And here it is.
Unveiled during a movie-exclusive Nintendo Direct presentation, Universal and Illumination unleashed the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which comes to theaters on April 1. As expected, it’s the biggest, most revealing trailer yet. Check it out.
Along with the trailer, the news broke about three new additions to the stacked cast. Wart is voiced by Luis Guzman, Honey Queen is voiced by Issa Rae, and in the biggest news, Yoshi is voiced by Donald Glover. Yes, Lando himself is now Yoshi. Apparently, there are more surprises coming too, but we’ll have to wait until the movie is out to find out about those.
As you’d expect from the rest of the trailer, the animation here looks just gorgeous. It also appears to have plenty of the kid-friendly humor that made the original film the billion-dollar hit that it was. And yet, we’re still not quite sure if this film will thread that needle, making fans of the franchise who grew up with it happy, along with their kids. That’s the sweet spot if this series really wants to soar. And we’re hoping this sequel really nails that balance. But, for now, it still looks heavy on the visuals and not so heavy on story and character.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who made the previous film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features the voices of (deep breath) Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Brie Larson. It opens on April 1, no fooling.
