The best trailers make you want to see a movie but also leave you unsure exactly what it’s about. The first trailer for Anniversary, which stars Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Dylan O’Brien, Phoebe Dynevor, and others, does just that. To start, it looks like a slick thriller about an out-of-place new girlfriend causing havoc. From there, though, a few twists and turns reveal the world of the film is much, much darker than you’d expect. Then you throw in a star of The Handmaid’s Tale, and the intrigue continues to grow.
Anniversary opens on October 29, and it also stars Zoey Deutch, McKenna Grace, Daryl McCormack, and Madeline Brewer. Brewer is best known for her one-eyed role as Janine on The Handmaid’s Tale, which definitely has similar vibes to where this trailer pivots. Check it out, and we’ll speak more about it after.
Let’s start with the film’s official description:
In this gripping thriller, a close-knit family is caught in the turmoil of a controversial rising movement known as “The Change.” Ellen and Paul (Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) witness their lives fall apart when Ellen’s former student Liz (Phoebe Dynevor) reappears and starts dating their son (Dylan O’Brien). As Liz becomes a part of the Taylor family, tensions rise and loyalties are tested. Liz’s role in “The Change” brings simmering conflicts to the surface, unraveling the fabric of the family just as the nation itself stands on edge during an alarming and challenging time of uncertainty.
So that’s the setup, and we see hints of this near the end of the trailer, with the different American flags being the biggest callout. We’re left wondering, is this more of a religious movement or a political one? How prevalent is it? Is there an opposition? Also, what exactly does “The Change” stand for? All of these questions really, really make us want to sit down and watch this movie, so mission accomplished, trailer editor.
Written by Lori Rosene-Gambino, from a story by Rosene-Gambino and director Jan Komasa, Anniversary opens October 29.
