After a week of teasing, it turns out that the Firefly cast is reuniting for an animated series. Maybe.
We say “maybe” because as Nathan Fillion and the others revealed during Washington DC’s Awesomecon, this hasn’t been picked up from a streamer yet. But the idea is for Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, and the rest of the living cast to reprise their roles from the cult classic series in another medium. Set between the show’s first season and the 2005 film Serenity, the show would tell more of the crew’s exploits and keep the established lore going while filling in new details about the universe.
Instead of Joss Whedon at the helm again, it’s Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters working as showrunners. As far as Whedon goes, he’s not involved with it, but Fillion explicitly mentioned that he got the ousted creator’s blessing. So far, a script for the first episode has been completed, and it’ll be sent out to buyers in the near future. You can see concept art for the series below, which comes courtesy of ShadowMachine, the studio behind Bojack Horseman and the Clone High revival.
Speaking to Deadline, Fillion acknowledged the passionate fanbase that’s “kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.” Prior to this announcement, the series has been sustained with a series of novels and comics released throughout the years, also set before or during the show’s events and prior to Serenity.
News of this potential Firefly revival comes a day after Hulu decided to not continue making Buffy: New Sunnydale, a continuation of Whedon’s most famous show.
