SpongeBob SquarePants has been around for over 25 years and—like any long-running pop-culture stalwart—has spawned associations that go way beyond the much-loved Nickelodeon animated series. Especially for people who grew up watching the show, SpongeBob has provided a seemingly endless source of meme material. And Magic: The Gathering, which has SpongeBob coming up on its ever-growing list of collabs, is well aware of this fact.
As revealed by Collider, MTG‘s Secret Lair will drop its Secret Lair x SpongeBob SquarePants collection—in both foil and regular editions—March 24 at 9 a.m. PT, so sign up to get notified here if you know you want to get your flippers on it.
There are three parts to this product launch. Secret Lair x SpongeBob Square Pants: Legends of Bikini Bottom, highlighting its characters with art by Caleb Meurer and Gregg Schigiel, and Secret Lair x SpongeBob Square Pants: Lands Under the Sea, which features cards exploring familiar locations from the show (Bikini Bottom and beyond) through art by Jon Vermilyea.
Most fun and most clever, though, is Secret Lair x SpongeBob Square Pants: Internet Sensation, bringing Magic magic to SpongeBob‘s long legacy of meme-ification, including this absolute gem with art by Tyler Walpole:
The source: “That Sinking Feeling,” which aired all the way back in 2010 as part of season seven, and yielded this indelible image to short-hand signify “loathing at a distance” (and/or variations thereof). Do you need it to play Magic: The Gathering with… or do you need it, along with the full Internet Sensation set, to frame and hang on your wall? (You can see more of the images at Collider.) Let us know with your favorite SpongeBob meme in the comments below.
