Today, Warner Bros. released the final trailer for Clayface, DC Studios’ bold body-horror take on the classic Batman villain. It’s composed mostly of reused shots from earlier trailers, but there are a few new, interesting tidbits in there, too.
Okay, first of all, that shot of Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) pushing someone into his moldable body and holding them there as they struggle? Horrifying!
Setting that aside, we also get a new scene of a frightened Dr. Caitlin Corr (Naomi Ackie) telling detective John Borelli (Max Minghella) that Matt can change his face. That comes into play at the end of the trailer, when we finally see Matt swap faces for the first time.
Who the hell is that guy, you ask?
Wait for it.
CLAYFACE.
It’s a fun button on the trailer—an effective tease that gives us a little more than we’ve seen before without showing the movie’s full hand. We still haven’t seen Clayface’s final form, and, supposedly, that will hold true until the movie is in theaters (though Harries did tell Empire magazine that it’s “fucking sick”). Always gotta leave ’em wanting more.
“Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured,” reads the film’s logline. “Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
Clayface is directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove). It hits theaters on October 23.
