The Dead Have Something to Scream About in ‘The Bride!’ Trailer

Don’t you dare call her the Bride of Frankenstein. The Bride—just the Bride—makes her grand entrance in the first full trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s creature romance after that monstrously intriguing teaser back in September. The Bride! stars Jessie Buckley as the title character, with Christian Bale as her similarly undead soulmate, and this extended glimpse gives us even more of those Bonnie and Clyde vibes, with a dash of Joker 2: Folie à Deux (ack), but also an anarchic, punk-rock energy that could indeed translate into an electrifying feature.

We now have a better sense of the Bride’s arc—with all those pleas for help, it’s clear she was not in a good place before dying and being brought back to life—as well as the movie’s plans to incorporate some sort of “damn the man” crusade against corruption but also spontaneous dance parties. The 1930s setting infuses the production design, but Buckley’s outlaw heroine is clearly a classic shit-starter unbeholden to any specific time period, declaring, “The dead have got something to say, and I’m saying it!”

As for Bale’s Frankie, we get that there’s an “I am a monster”/”So am I” dynamic in the relationship, and that perhaps the concept of “monster” will expand beyond the couple’s gruesome origins. Less prominent are characters played by Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and the blink-and-you’ll-miss-them Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz.

The song in the background is “Everybody Scream” by Florence + the Machine, which feels exactly in line with the tone being conveyed here. What do you think of the trailer—and the propulsive, subversive feeling that The Bride! is giving off?

Written and directed by Gyllenhaal, The Bride! hits theaters March 6.
