That tortured sigh you just heard on the wind was from everyone associated with Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which hits theaters in April. The reason? The Mummy movie everyone is really excited for—featuring the longed-for reunion of swashbuckling sweethearts Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser—just announced another thunder-stealing update. The Mummy 4 is not only officially happening, but it also has a release date!
The stars of 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns (2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor swapped in Maria Bello for Weisz) will reprise their roles as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan-O’Connell, Variety confirms, but there are no further plot details beyond that.
There’s also no word if other co-stars, like John Hannah (who played Evelyn’s brother), Oded Fehr (Ardeth Bay), or characters—namely Rick and Evelyn’s son, Alex (who was 21 in the third film)—will be a part of things.
We can guess, however, that some kind of back-from-the-dead situation requiring the adventurer and the Egyptologist to get back out in the field will arise. And we can also guess there will be plenty of energetic action and horror elements, considering the directors are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream, Abigail). The script is by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan; Orphan: First Kill).
There is some good news for the Mummy picture coming out in a few months, though: The Mummy 4 isn’t hitting screens until May 19, 2028. Perhaps there’s room enough for multiple sarcophagus jailbreaks to please creature-feature fans after all.
