That Sure Is a Picture of a Knife, ‘Friday the 13th’ Spinoff ‘Crystal Lake’

It’s Friday the 13th—a hallowed day for horror fans and the ideal moment for Peacock to share an update on the Jason Voorhees prequel series, Crystal Lake, coming later this year. The streamer did just that, but it’s a little underwhelming: no trailer. No teaser. Not even a first good look at Linda Cardellini as Jason’s unhinged mother, Pamela. Instead, we got a trio of images that feel like someone was assembling a summer camp slaughter-themed mood board.

The first one is at the top of this post; here are the other two, shared on X with the following reminder: “Crystal Lake. Coming soon to Peacock.” It shows a hand (Pamela’s???) brandishing a bloody knife with a tree in the background.

Next up: Crystal Lake itself. There’s a cabin with lit-up windows on the shore, a lonely dock, and fog making things a tad more atmospheric.

And finally, sneaker-clad feet in a tangle on the floor of what could be a boathouse, given the life preserver in the background. Are these horny teens doing something Pamela won’t approve of? Are these dead teens feeling Pamela’s wrath? Perhaps both?

We’re feasting on scraps for now, but we’re just glad Peacock checked the calendar and realized it had to share something, especially after February’s Friday the 13th passed without any fanfare. The final Friday the 13th in 2026 doesn’t come until November, so maybe Crystal Lake will be weaving some kind of Halloween-spooky season web that includes that particular red-letter day.

Here’s what we do know about Crystal Lake so far, other than it’s “coming soon to Peacock.” It’s traveled a rocky road since it was first announced in October 2022. Hannibal‘s Bryan Fuller, the original showrunner, announced in May 2024 that he’d departed the project, which is a collaboration between the streamer and indie film powerhouse A24.

On social media, Fuller wrote, “For reasons beyond [co-showrunner Jim Danger Gray and my] control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material. We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.”

In June 2024, the Wrap shared a deeper dive into what went wrong—budget concerns played a part—but also affirmed that Crystal Lake would still be moving forward. Last March, Linda Cardellini was announced to be playing the main character of Pamela Voorhees in a series now being overseen by It: Welcome to Derry‘s Brad Caleb Kane. In July, Chucky veteran Callum Vinson was cast as a young version of future immortal serial killer Jason.

Kane contributed a short video message to the “Jason Universe” panel at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where the main focus was the future of Jason on the big screen as well as the short film Sweet Revenge, made in conjunction with a cider company (hope you watched it already, because it’s no longer online).

With zero updates on a new Friday the 13th movie, Crystal Lake is all we have. It’s been 17 years since the Michael Bay-produced Friday the 13th remake, which is somehow looking better and better in retrospect. Please, Peacock and A24—can we have something more soon?
