The Tesla feature known as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” does not turn your car into the driver of your car. To some, that may sound like anti-Tesla propaganda, but take it from Tesla itself, which writes in a disclaimer:
“Full Self-Driving (Supervised) requires active driver supervision with eyes on the road and does not make the vehicle autonomous. You, and any drivers you authorize, are always responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle when using these features, as well as for any and all speeding, tolls, parking and other traffic violations even when it is in use. It’s your responsibility to make sure that you only use Full Self-Driving (Supervised) when it’s safe and legal to do so.”
In other words, when you turn on FSD, in the eyes of the law, you’re doing all the stuff the car is doing, even if you’re just sitting there solving a Rubik’s Cube or whatever people do in their Teslas.
This may all seem too obvious to even say, but this guy apparently needed to hear it:
The incident above happened in Parker, Colorado. A guy apparently got pulled over for speeding, and then sat there like the guy in the Trade Offer meme trying to make some kind of deal with the cop: In exchange for, uh, nothing, please accept my inane excuse that the car was driving, because, you see, autopilot was on. At one point he even said “I wasn’t driving.”
Thanks to a body camera, we can all enjoy what happened next, which is that the cop won the easiest debate of all time and left abruptly.
