Superman and Spider-Man Set to Crossover for the First Time in 50 Years

In 1976, comic book fans got the crossover of a lifetime. DC and Marvel published a series called Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Battle of the Century, a story that aimed to answer one of those at the time unanswerable questions: which hero could beat the other? That was almost 50 years ago, and to celebrate, DC and Marvel are at it again.

The comic book giants just announced that in March 2026, DC will publish Superman/Spider-Man #1, which will be followed in April by Marvel Comics publishing Spider-Man/Superman #1. There’s no news yet on the creative teams or storylines, but if we are to go by what Marvel and DC recently cooked up for Batman/Deadpool, you can assume it’s going to be epic.

But that’s not all. Before the new comics hit shelves, the publishers are also going to republish new editions of that classic, 50-year-old series. Things start on January 7, 2026, when DC will publish a “Treasury Edition” of Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man #1. That continues on February 4 with the release of DC and Marvel Present: Superman and Spider-Man Treasury Edition #1, which is actually a “reprint of Marvel Treasury Edition #28, bringing another classic out-of-print team-up back to comic book shops,” according to the press release.

Here’s a look at the front and back covers, as well as the title page.

The original comic series told the story of Superman and Spider-Man, at first, battling, but eventually teaming up to fight the combined forces of Lex Luthor and Doc Ock. There was no real explanation of how and why New York and Metropolis kind of became one, and no explanation of how or why Superman and Spider-Man exist in the same universe. It was just the two characters, in the same city, and the story went from there.

It’ll be interesting to see if our more modern need for exposition and explainers comes up with a more elegant way to merge the Man of Steel and the Webslinger. But, either way, it’s going to be fun to see how some of today’s top comic book minds work the two into one story. And who knows? Maybe this will set the stage for a big-screen showdown one day. Dare to dream.
