‘Stranger Things’ Star Gaten Matarazzo’s New Movie Is an Even Stranger Trip

The pairing of actors Gaten Matarazzo and Sean Giambrone in a drug-fueled sci-fi horror comedy is oddly perfect. Both are known for playing smart, nerdy kids on very popular period-set shows, whom we got to watch grow up over the course of the series. So seeing them here as friends, in college, experimenting with drugs, could oddly be viewed as a sequel to either Stranger Things or The Goldbergs, if you so choose, especially since things do go a little upside down.

The movie is called Pizza Movie, and it stars the pair as college roommates who take a mysterious drug that will kill you if you don’t pair it with pizza. But they didn’t know that second part. And so, the journey to get the pizza they had delivered downstairs becomes a blood-soaked, creature-filled adventure thanks to the drugs. Check it out.

That looks like silly fun, and we’re very much here for it. Hopefully, the fact that it’s a Hulu original movie doesn’t hold it back from being a proper, R-rated college comedy. But we’ll see.

The film is directed by Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher, who are better known for their online handle, BriTANicK. They’re former Saturday Night Live writers who rose to fame through the competitive ranks of online videos, but this is their directorial debut. Interestingly, they also wrote the new movie Over Your Dead Body, starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving, which is also directed by a former SNL writer and comedy video guy, the Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone.

So you get a pretty good idea of what this movie can be based on that pedigree. Throw in supporting performances from the likes of Sarah Sherman, Daniel Radcliffe (apparently), Lulu Wilson, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, and many others, and we hope this lives up to that potential.

Pizza Movie, which is just an objectively good title, drops on Hulu on April 3.
