Say hello to Grammy-winning, newly inducted EGOT man Steven Spielberg.
During Sunday’s Grammy awards, the filmmaker took home an award for the 2024 documentary film, Music by John Williams. It won for “Best Music Film” at the non-televised ceremony, and marks his first win and nomination at the music-focused event. Spielberg, along with others like George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy, both produced the doc and feature in it, talking about their about their relationship with Williams.
In a statement, Spielberg thanked Grammy voters, calling it a “obviously deeply meaningful because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled.” For those keeping track at home, Spielberg is the 21st EGOT recipient, joined by the likes of Viola Davis and Elton John. He’s also the oldest EGOT winner at 79 years old, and the third director after John Gielgud in 1991 and Mike Nichols in 1991.
The first collaboration with Steven Spielberg and John Williams was 1974’s Sugarland Express after he specifically requested Williams to work on the film. A year later, they reunited for the first Jaws, followed by Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, and the Indiana Jones series. Several films they’ve worked on together, such as ET and Schindler’s List, were nominated and later won Best Original Score at the Oscars. Their partnership is so strong that Williams announced he’d likely retire from scoring films after Indiana Jones 5, only to come back to score Spielberg’s ci-fi flick Disclosure Day, which hits theaters in June.
