We’re not sure if there’s a Christmas in the Spaceballs universe, but if there is, it’s probably today. Hot on the heels of creator Mel Brooks making the news of a sequel official, a new report suggests two of the original’s main stars will be returning as well.
Deadline reports that original stars Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are both expected to return for Spaceballs 2, which is coming to theaters in 2027. Keke Palmer (Nope) is also expected to star in the film, along with Josh Gad.
Pullman makes sense, as he’s continued to act in the almost 40 years since the release of the first film. Moranis, however, is a bigger surprise. The iconic comedic actor hasn’t appeared in a new movie in almost 30 years. He was rumored to return for a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel a few years ago, which was also going to involve Gad—but now it seems Spaceballs is the property that Gad is going to use to get Moranis back to the big screen. (He did reprise his Spaceballs role briefly in a 2018 episode of The Goldbergs.)
In the original film Pullman played Lone Starr, a Han Solo-type who ends up realizing he’s a prince and marrying Princess Vespa, played by Daphne Zuniga. His main rival is Dark Helmet, the Darth Vader character played by Moranis. Helmet ends up stranded on an alien planet alongside his fellow Spaceballs President Skroob (Brooks) and Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner). Brooks is coming back for the movie, but so far just as his other character Yogurt. No word yet on Zuniga or Wyner.
Amazon has yet to confirm the return of Pullman or Moranis—but in the teaser video released Thursday by Brooks, we did see the broken helmet of Dark Helmet with the phrase “The Schwartz Awakens.” That was certainly a hint that he could return.
Released in 1987, Spaceballs was a parody of Star Wars when Star Wars was thought to be over. Almost 40 years later, that franchise is back and Brooks and company are also back to parody it.
The still untitled Spaceballs 2 is coming in 2027 and will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar) from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad.
