A recent filing with the US Communications Commission (FCC) suggests that Sony could soon launch its new flagship noise-cancelling headphones, the WH-1000XM6.
The FCC filing, spotted by The Walkman Blog, reveals some design changes, including a new hinge design and removable ear pads.
A product diagram also shows that the ear cushion can be removed to reveal a plate with the model and serial number, which could mean that the ear cushions attach without screws. Many designs on the market use magnets so Sony could go down this route.
The model number of the new headphones is YY2984, similar to the XM5’s YY2954. The FCC’s confidentiality request expires on 22 July 2025, indicating a possible official launch on or soon after that date.
Sony released the latest version of the headphones, the WH-1000XM5, three years ago. They have been repeatedly hailed as the best on the market and will compete with the likes of the Bose QuietComfort Headphones and Sonos Ace.
