‘Scream 7’ Just Won’t Stop Making Money as ‘Scream 8’ Gets Started

For the first time ever, the Scream franchise has a $200 million grosser. So it’s no surprise that work has officially begun on bringing Ghostface back for the eighth time.

With Scream 7 recently crossing $200 million at the box office, Deadline reports that Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, sisters who recently were the showrunners on Poker Face (and who’ve also written on Agents of SHIELD, Fringe, and Suits), have been tapped to write the screenplay for Scream 8. There is no word on what direction that film will take or who may or may not be back, but Scream 7 director Kevin Williamson recently said that he does not want to return to direct.

It’s an odd time for the Scream franchise. On the one hand, it’s more popular than ever, experiencing its highest-grossing installment yet. But that installment was largely panned by critics and left the series in a bit of a creative black hole. Stars of Scream 5 and 6, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, unceremoniously (and controversially) left the franchise, opening the door for Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney in Scream 7. Then, that film introduced Sidney’s daughter, who is also a contender to take over the franchise, though that just somehow doesn’t feel right.

Whatever is next for the franchise will, at least for now, be up to the Zuckermans. And with their considerable experience telling serialized stories, we’re confident whatever take they have is one built to bring Scream back to its glory. Or at least we hope. Because, despite just how well Scream 7 has done and will continue to do, we just aren’t sure if it was enough of a crowd-pleaser to get everyone back another time.

Also, the bar is usually significantly lower by the time a horror franchise gets to an eighth installment, right? Ghostface already took Manhattan in part six, so maybe next time they go international? Or go to Hell? We’ll probably find out sometime in 2028.

Are you excited for Scream to continue with a part eight? Let us know below.
