Ritz cracker sandwiches have been an incredibly popular snack in the U.S. for decades. But if you or anyone in your family has an allergy to peanuts, you may want to check your cupboards. Because the maker of Ritz and the FDA have both issued recalls because some Ritz sandwiches labeled as cheese variety have been shipped with peanut butter.

Mondelēz Global, the maker of food brands like Ritz, Oreo, and Clif Bar, has released a statement warning consumers in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania to check any individual packages labeled as Ritz cheese crackers.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product,” the company said in a statement posted online.

The recall includes 27.6 oz. 20-packs sold at various retailers in the eight states. The retail UPC is 44000 075842, and the “best when used by” dates are Jan. 8, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2026.

The exterior of the packages indicates they were the peanut butter variety, but the individual packaging inside has the cheese-only label. Presumably, any family with a severe peanut allergy in the home would probably be avoiding such a purchase, but obviously, the trouble could come when the packages were pulled out of the main box. At that point, they would be labeled as the cheese variety, and people with allergies may have no idea what they’re about to consume.

“There have been no reports of injury or illness reported to Mondelēz Global LLC to date related to this product, and we are issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution,” the company said.

Consumers with any questions about the Ritz recall are encouraged to contact the company at 1-844-366-1171 between Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

There have been a number of food recalls in 2025 across a broad swath of food categories. There’s been frozen chicken with metal pieces, listeria in Hello Fresh meals, E. coli in Whole Foods ground beef, and listeria in frozen pasta meals, just to name a few. We’ve even seen radioactive shrimp, though warnings from a Republican senator that you’d literally become the alien from Alien were overblown.

Most recently, Americans have even seen recalls of baby formula with botulism, and over a million bags of shredded cheese sold at places like Aldi, Walmart, and Target have been recalled for containing metal. Dog food has also been recalled this week over the unintended presence of plastic pieces.
