Meta has just announced a significant update to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

In a new blog post over on its official website, Meta has outlined some interesting developments around its Ray-Ban Meta glasses, including new frame options and some fresh AI-enhanced features.

The most interesting news here relates to a raft of new features coming to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

After appearing in Early Access in select countries, live translation is now rolling out to all users. This lets you conduct seamless conversations between four languages: English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

What’s impressive is that this all works on-device, with no network connectivity required.

Provided you’ve downloaded the required language pack in advance, you’ll hear what the other person is saying in your chosen language in real time. They, in turn, will be able to see what you’re saying in their language on your phone.

New messaging and music options

Another neat new feature is the ability to send messages, photos, audio calls, and video calls through Instagram from your Ray-Ban Meta glasses, all using a natural “Hey Meta” request.

It’s already possible to make calls and send messages through WhatsApp and Messenger, as well as to send text messages.

Access to music apps is also expanding outside of the US and Canada, taking in Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Shazam. Just ask Meta AI to start playing music, or for information on what’s playing.

Coming soon – to the US and Canada at least – is the ability for Meta AI to see precisely what you see, and for you to then hold a conversation on what’s in front of you. Meta uses the example of asking Meta to spot a viable a butter substitute in your fridge, or a suitable wine pairing from a glance at your wine rack.

Meta AI is also coming to more EU countries, while the ability for you to ask Meta AI about things in your eye-line is coming to the EU next week after hitting the UK last month.

Also new to the Ray-Ban Meta range is a series of fresh Skyler frame and lens colour options, including the Skyler Shiny Chalky Gray with Transitions Sapphire lenses.

There’s also the Skyler Shiny Black with G15 green or clear lenses.

All in all, Meta’s glasses appear to be getting (and looking) smarter and smarter.
