There’s a new Paranormal Activity movie on the way, which isn’t really a shocker. The micro-budget 2007 original scared up huge box office returns and sparked a franchise that’s dropped a new entry every few years since. Part seven, Next of Kin, came out in 2021, so it’s about time for a new piece in the saga—beyond the current stage play, that is. But while an eighth Paranormal Activity might not be that exciting on its own, this part of the news sure is: horror titan James Wan, whose Atomic Monster completed its merger with Paranormal Activity home base Blumhouse in 2024, is adding his name to the project.
The Hollywood Reporter got the scoop, writing that Wan is joining team Paranormal Activity as a producer alongside Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Orem Peli, who wrote and directed the 2007 original and has also produced all its sequels.
Peli has worked with Wan before on the Insidious films, just one other trophy on Wan’s ever-growing wall of franchises, both horror and otherwise. Wan, of course, is one of the creative forces behind the multi-entry Saw and Conjuring series. He also directed both of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman movies for DC Studios and made Furious 7 in the Fast & Furious series. As a producer, he worked on both M3GAN movies and 2020’s Mortal Kombat (and its upcoming sequel)—plus, he still makes time for one-off projects, directing 2021’s truly unhinged Malignant and producing Osgood Perkins’ Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, released earlier this year, to name just a few.
All this is to say that while Paranormal Activity was already a blockbuster, bringing the power of Wan aboard signals the franchise still has many, many more frights left to pour over eager audiences. The new feature will have Paramount as a co-producer alongside Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, so expect this one to get plenty of attention.
“I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying,” Wan said in a statement to THR. “I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.”
Added Blum, “Diving in with James for this exciting rebirth of the franchise that started it all for Blumhouse is exactly what we dreamed of when we merged with Atomic Monster. I’ll be actively involved with him to introduce this new chapter. Thankfully, we’re able to spend a little more than the $15,000 we had on the first movie, but one thing will remain the same—do not see it alone.”
Also, do not leave your Ouija board unattended! There are no plot details (or any info on the writer, director, or cast) for the new Paranormal Activity movie, but we’re looking forward to being pleasantly terrified when it eventually hits screens.
