Paramount’s New ‘G.I. Joe’ Movie Plans Sound Dumb as Hell

Hot off getting a green light to acquire Warner Bros., Paramount’s looking to revive G.I. Joe with not one, but two movie ideas. And already this sounds just incredibly exhausting.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, there are two treatments in the works: one to be written by comedian and writer Danny McBride and the other by Chronicle writer and Dirk Gently creator Max Landis. The idea, per sources speaking to the outlet, is that both men will write separate takes that’ll then be combined. However, a separate source claims the two projects are being made with no blending in mind, so we’ll wait to see what the full story is there.

This is Paramount’s latest go at making G.I. Joe a hit with audiences after the initial live-action movies in 2009 and 2013 and 2021’s standalone Snake Eyes movie. It’s also a play at revitalizing Landis’ career after 2017, when he was faced with accusations of sexual assault by several women. As THR notes, Paramount Skydance has a history of doing this: pre-merger, Skydance Animation brought on ousted Pixar head John Lasseter as its animation chief following his own accusations of misconduct at the Toy Story studio. Post-merger, the studio announced Rush Hour 4, which will be directed by series helmer Brett Ratner, who similarly faced accusations back in 2017.

We’ll have more on this G.I. Joe experiment as news develops. And speaking of Paramount—don’t forget to see Scream 7 in theaters this weekend… or maybe not.
