Why hasn’t Murderbot achieved Severance levels of cultural buzz? Both shows are on Apple TV+ and both shows feature sci-fi intrigue, outstanding performances, and very wry senses of humor. If you’ve yet to bite on Murderbot, here’s another reason why you should: it just got renewed for a second season, the day before its season one finale.

As fans know, Murderbot is based on Martha Wells’ wonderful Murderbot Diaries book series, so there’s plenty of material to draw on moving forward. Season one of Murderbot has followed Wells’ first entry, All Systems Red, pretty closely, with some well-chosen character expansions and plot tweaks.

Apple TV+’s announcement confirms that, obviously, star Alexander Skarsgård will return as the title character; he’s also an executive producer on the show along with creators and showrunners Chris and Paul Weitz.

“We’re so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received, and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’s world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios, and the rest of the team,” the Weitz brothers said in a press release.

Apple TV+ head of programming, Matt Cherniss, was similarly excited: “Chris, Paul, Alexander, and the entire Murderbot team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty, and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere. We can’t wait to unveil what’s next for Murderbot and, of course, Sanctuary Moon in season two.”

To riff on the Rise and Fall of Sancutary Moon theme song—Murderbot’s favorite premium quality entertainment—there’s a place beyond the wormhole, where only lovers (of Murderbot) go! Join us and you won’t be disappointed. The season one finale arrives tomorrow, July 11, on Apple TV+.
