2024 was jam-packed with movies that we loved (and occasionally missed, due to, you know, the whole ‘jam-packed with movies’ thing), but one absolute favorite of the year is finally coming to streaming in just a few short weeks.
This morning Universal announced that The Wild Robot–which topped our end-of-year-lists as our favorite film of 2024–will begin streaming on Peacock from January 24, after it already made its home debut last year. The sumptuous animated film, starring Lupita Nyong’o, Kit Connor, and Pedro Pascal, adapted Peter Brown’s 2016 novel of the same name, garnered critical acclaim upon release last year even beyond the most prodigious “io9’s best movie” title, including multiple nominations at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and the Annies.
Following Nyong’o’s Roz, the titular robot washed ashore on an island after her company cargo ship is waylaid by a storm, The Wild Robot tells a gorgeous, often heartbreaking story of parenthood and our connection to the natural world, as Roz finds herself attempting to help the animal inhabitants of her new “home”–coming across a lone gosling she forges a close connection to as she prepares him for the coming seasonal migration.
“In the world of film criticism, one might assume writing an absolute rave is the easiest to do. That’s usually true, but not here,” io9’s resident film reporter, Germain Lussier, wrote in his raving review of the film last year “The Wild Robot is so good, no examples I can cite, no description I can come up with, and no number of superlatives I can muster do it justice. You’ll just have to see and experience it for yourself. It’s incredibly special.”
And now you have every opportunity to do so!
