The best electric toothbrushes have features that could surprise you: they’re now crammed with tech features to guide and monitor your brushing. They’ll also allow you to minutely customise their performance so that it’s comfortable and effective for you.
There are now so many excellent models available that we have round-ups for the best Oral-B brushes, the best electric toothbrushes overall – and the best budget models.
But alongside the well-known brands like Oral-B, there are less familiar names, some of which are producing cutting-edge products – and often for much less.

Best New Electric Toothbrush of the Year – Winner: Oclean X Ultra S
Emma Rowley / Foundry
The X Ultra S is Oclean’s latest flagship brush, and it’s a wee made, attractive model with a tapered, matt handle and full colour, touchscreen display. When you’re brushing, the screen will display a countdown timer but you can also swipe it to switch between brushing modes.
But there are far more customisation options in the app, where you can take a quiz and get a smart suggestion, choose from one of 14 cleaning modes (for example, braces, super whitening or travel). Or create your own custom mode, specifying brushing time, mode and intensity level.
The brush has a highly visible light ring pressure sensor and comes with high-quality accessories, including a USB charging case for travel. Another huge plus is its 40-day battery life. Altogether, the X Ultra S is a clever, sophisticated electric toothbrush. And there’s one more feature: in its scientific brushing mode, it uses bone conduction technology to deliver audio brushing tips as you go.

Best New Electric Toothbrush of The Year – First Runner-Up: Be Lucent Prism
Emma Rowley / Foundry
This elegant brush from Swedish brand Be Lucent. Instead of the black, lozenge shaped screen you’ll see on most brushes equipped with them, the Prism has a hidden LED screen under its surface. The display shows which brushing mode you’re in, the timer and battery indicator.
Its brushing options are far simpler than those offered by the X Ultra S. It has just three modes: clean, sensitive and white. And when you pick it up and start brushing, it’ll come on automatically.
It has a phenomenal 60-day battery life, charges via USB and comes with a travel case for its toothbrush heads, while the handle is lockable, so it won’t switch on in your luggage.

Best New Electric Toothbrush of The Year – Second Runner-Up: Oral-B iO Series 2
Emma Rowley / Foundry
This year, Oral-B released its most affordable iO yet. While we don’t think it’s for everyone – see our ultimate iO guide to find the best model for you – it’s an excellent choice for anyone wanting to upgrade from a manual brush. It’s far gentler than most electric toothbrushes and has three soft brushing modes – super-sensitive, gentle and daily clean – and easy to use, single-button operation.
It has a two-minute brushing timer, a little pressure indicator and – what may cement it as a no-hassle buy – a battery life of several weeks, which is longer than any other iO model.
