Imagine just casually having one of C-3PO‘s feet displayed in your home. There’s nothing Star Wars fans love more than weird little details, and this unique piece of memorabilia—going up for sale as part of Heritage Auctions’ upcoming May the Fourth-timed event—certainly fits the bill.
Anthony Daniels did indeed wear this as part of his costume while filming 1980’s Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Take a closer look in the gallery:
The C-3PO foot comes from the personal collection of legendary art director and production designer Harry Lange, whose credits besides Empire included Return of the Jedi, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moonraker, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Dark Crystal.
According to Heritage Auctions, “the costume piece is constructed of vacuum formed plastic ribbed shell, plated in metallic gold and expertly studio finished. Measuring 12″ x 3.75″ x 5″, the foot’s bottom is open, as the shell is designed to fit over an actor’s shoe. The foot is an Anthony Daniels signature costume piece and represents a lightweight alternative in the evolution of the C-3PO costume,” having evolved from the heavier creation Daniels wore in A New Hope.
Can you actually wear it? As a matter of fact: “There is a small, clean production made pinhole in the toe for attachment to a shoe beneath it. The back of the shell is intentionally split to allow a foot and shoe to slip into it.”
Not that you would want to walk around in such a priceless bit of Star Wars history, mind you! A glorious trophy case is the proper way to present something like this. As of writing, the current bid on C-3PO’s foot is $500, which in the scheme of movie collectibles actually isn’t that steep.
