Netflix will stop working on some Amazon Fire TV models – find out if you’re affected

If you have an older Amazon Fire TV Stick, you may have already noticed that software and security updates have stopped rolling out on them – though you may still be using them regardless.

However, support for one of the most popular streaming apps will soon be taken away.

Amazon has confirmed that certain models will not be able to use Netflix from early as next month, as reported by our sister site, PC World.

If you’d like to know whether your device is affected, then keep on reading. You can also find out which Google Chromecast models are still supported with software and security updates.

Does Netflix still work on my Amazon Fire TV device?

At the time of writing, Netflix still works on all Amazon Fire TV products, but that will be changing soon.

From 3 June 2025, Netflix will no longer be compatible with first-generation Amazon streaming devices.

The products affected are:

  • 1st generation Fire TV
  • 1st generation Fire TV Stick 1
  • 1st generation Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote

While the official reason hasn’t been listed, there is speculation that it could be down to Netflix using the AV1 codec, which is designed for better picture quality – something crucial to anyone on the Premium 4K plan.

These devices don’t support that codec. So, what are your options?

Should I upgrade my 1st generation Amazon Fire TV device?

Well, that depends on how much you use Netflix. If you’re a regular user, there won’t be a way to get around this app blockade manually, so your only option is to upgrade your device.

Even if you don’t use Netflix that much, an upgrade may still be worth considering. Software and security updates stopped for these models over five years ago, according to AFTV News. So, you may be experiencing buffering and performance issues.

You can currently buy the cheapest Amazon Fire TV Stick from as little as £29.99/$29.99. If that’s still not cheap enough, you can wait until sale seasons such as Amazon Prime Day (which typically takes place in July) or November’s Black Friday month deals.
