Will we ever be free of Netflix price hikes? Apparently not, because the American arm of the streaming giant has confirmed a fresh batch of increases.
Countries besides the US getting a hike include Canada, Argentina and Portugal. Fortunately, the UK has managed to escape… for now.
If you want to know when these new costs kick in, and how much it could cost you, then we have everything you need to know.
How much is the Netflix US price increase?
Netflix announced the new American price hikes on 21 January 2025, and they will come into effect during subscribers’ next billing cycle.
Here’s what the numbers look like:
- Netflix Standard with Ads: Increasing from $6.99 to $7.99 per month
- Netflix Standard: Increasing from $15.49 to $17.99 per month
- Netflix Premium: Increasing from $22.99 to $24.99 per month
When could Netflix UK next increase its prices?
According to the BBC, Netflix had “nothing to share right now” on the possibility of Netflix UK price increases, but that doesn’t mean we’ve got off scott-free.
Netflix’s last price increase for the UK was on 18 October 2023 for both new and existing subscribers, which is over a year ago – but this price increase was also for the US, which makes things a little confusing.
19 countries hiked up prices in January, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix UK followed in 2025.
Prior to this, Netflix UK last changed its prices in December 2020.
How much could Netflix UK subscriptions increase?
Again, we don’t know how much Netflix UK subscriptions will increase, but we can guess.
Last time there was a price increase, the UK’s Standard and Standard with Ads plans remained the same. These prices are £11.99 for the Standard plan, and £4.99 for the Standard with Ads plan.
Here’s how the other plans changed in October 2023:
- Netflix Basic: Increased from £6.99 per month to £7.99 per month
- Netflix Premium: Increased from £15.99 per month to £17.99 per month
That’s a £1 increase for Netflix Basic and a £2 price hike for Premium. However, it’s worth noting that Netflix Basic no longer exists, and subscribers on that plan have now been transferred over to the Standard with Ads plan.
Netflix US had price increases across all its plans, and the numbers are the equivalent hikes of what we saw in Spain and Italy. So, the UK could follow suit.
Based on that, here’s what we estimate the new Netflix UK prices could be if they increased:
- Netflix Standard with Ads: Possible increase from £4.99 to £5.99 per month
- Netflix Standard: Possible increase from £11.99 to £13.49 per month
- Netflix Premium: Possible increase from £17.99 to £19.99 per month
Is there any way to avoid a potential Netflix price hike?
Short of cancelling your Netflix subscription, no. Netflix does not offer annual plans like Disney+ and Amazon Prime do.
The best way to save money is to either downgrade your plan or leave the service and get your streaming needs from a rival platform.
