The saga of Cara Dune vs. Star Wars has come to an end. Lucasfilm and the Walt Disney Company have reached an agreement with actress Gina Carano in their legal dispute over her firing from The Mandalorian.
“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies,” a spokesperson from Lucasfilm said. “Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
This all began back in 2021 when io9 exclusively broke the news that Lucasfilm had parted ways with the star of The Mandalorian. The move came after months of complaints about Carano’s online presence, including mocking covid mask mandates, spreading conspiracies about the United States election, liking posts disparaging the Black Lives Matter movement, and deriding pronoun usage.
Then, in 2024, Carano sued Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination, basically claiming none of that was against her contract and fell under free speech. Oh, and since much of it happened on Twitter, Elon Musk was helping to fund the lawsuit. “Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to go along with the mob,” Carano said in a statement at the time.
A few months later, it seemed inevitable that the case would make it to court, when a judge claimed that Disney had “not identified any evidence—in the Complaint or otherwise—to substantiate a claim that they employ public-facing actors for the purpose of promoting the ‘values of respect,’ ‘decency,’ ‘integrity,’ or ‘inclusion.’”
But now, that’s all over. The case has been settled. No monetary amount was revealed and is unlikely to be. Now we wait to see if Lucasfilm is serious about “working together with Ms. Carano” in the near future, or just saying that.
Carano later released a statement on X. “I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force,” Carano’s statement reads in part. “I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit. Thank you Mr. Musk and X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return.”
