Looks Like Meta’s First Smart Glasses With a Screen Will Be Ray-Bans After All

We might only be days away from Meta’s next pair of smart glasses, but there’s still time for one last leak—and this one is a doozy. Meta’s smart glasses, which are expected to roll out this week during Meta’s Connect conference, will likely bear Ray-Ban branding after all, and we may have just gotten a very official look.

An unlisted video spotted on Meta’s YouTube channel and first reported on by UploadVR seems to confirm a lot of what we expected about Meta’s next pair of smart glasses. The video (now taken down, oops!) shows glasses with an HUD, short for heads-up display, that can relay notifications for messages, navigation, and information about voice commands. None of that is groundbreaking, per se, but it’s a fairly solid confirmation of prior rumors. Speaking of confirmations, the video also shows someone scribbling on a pad, suggesting Meta’s glasses will indeed be coupled with Meta’s sEMG wristband, a wrist-worn wearable that can read the electrical signals in your body and translate gestures into inputs on the glasses.

The new Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses! 🤩 I’m very excited!

Meta’s upcoming HUD smart glasses will actually be Ray-Ban branded, paired with the sEMG wristband for finger-swipe control.

The biggest surprise, however, is that the video shows Ray-Ban branding, which Meta had been rumored to ditch this go-around. That should come as a surprise, but also maybe a relief, since we don’t have to worry about Meta spearheading the style part of its glasses, choosing (like previous iterations of Meta Ray-Bans) to focus on what’s happening inside. Based on the video, it looks like Meta will also still be leaning heavily into AI and computer vision with its glasses, though I hope this iteration is more capable than the current version on Meta’s Ray-Bans, which I find finicky at best.

Another thing that jumped out to me is a glimpse of what appears to be the rumored second iteration of Oakley-branded smart glasses that come with an upgraded camera and battery life and are more geared toward sports than everyday use. These glasses, dubbed “Sphaera” if leaks are to be believed, are pretty much the platonic ideal of the Oakley look—they’re wraparound shades that look ideal for action sports like snowboarding. While recent leaks don’t reveal much about Sphaera design-wise, if prior leaks from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman are accurate, they may have a centered camera, which would make them more suited for sports like cycling.

All of this is pretty tantalizing if you’re a fan of smart glasses or already own Meta’s Ray-Bans, and the best part is that you likely won’t have to wait very long to find out if it’s legit. Meta’s annual Connect developer conference will take place this Wednesday, and if there’s one venue to unveil new smart glasses to the world, that would be it.
