The Honmoon is not the only thing that’s sealed as KPop Demon Hunters seals the deal in becoming the most popular film of all time on Netflix.
The massive success of KPop Demon Hunters has finally realized the breakthrough hopes Netflix aimed for with its own slate of feature films. It’s the first feature to hit that sweet spot of crossover fandom that the likes of Stranger Things and Wednesday have garnered as a new franchise for the streamer. Netflix reported that the Sony Pictures Animation action musical has clocked 236 million total views, charting in the top spot of Netflix’s most popular English-language film list.
Not only was KPop Demon Hunters the most watched film last week, but it also added another 25.4 million views in the same span of days that the film was released in theaters for its special weekend sing-along screenings. The phenomenon is unprecedented, as the numbers held strong while fans flocked to the theater to see it with fellow Huntr/x and Saja Boys fans. The film hit its anticipated $18 million domestic box office projection across its two-day run.
So many recent Hollywood play-it-safe moves made by major studio competitors have been absolutely shattered by the power of the overnight sensation, boosted by word of mouth and audiences’ hunger for genuine art and heartfelt storytelling with a killer soundtrack. The Frozen comparisons are no joke and while that film’s popularity was essentially driven by one song, Kpop Demon Hunters tops that with four charting soundtrack needle drops in one film.
Let’s keep this “Golden” moment going strong into the fall, as fans eagerly anticipate any news regarding potential sequels or spin-offs. We need more and are so excited to see where it goes, especially as things wrap up with Stranger Things and Wednesday proves its sophomore season is no supernatural slump. It will be fun to witness Netflix go all in on its female-fronted franchises.
