A Minecraft Movie was the second highest-grossing domestic release of 2025, building on the video game’s devoted fan base and delivering a movie that inspired audiences to transform theaters into interactive experiences. A sequel to the Jack Black-Jason Momoa smash was inevitably confirmed, and the perfect addition has just been announced: Kirsten Dunst.
We say Dunst is perfectly suited to A Minecraft Movie 2 not because she’s an Oscar-nominated actress or because she’s got experience playing characters who are pulled into freaky game worlds (see: 1995’s Jumanji). It’s because she seemingly made this casting happen by a joking remark she made last summer in an interview with Town and Country. Discussing her upcoming projects, the star of Civil War and Roofman mentioned an upcoming film with her frequent collaborator Sofia Coppola.
But she also revealed Minecraft 2 was on her wish list. Her two young sons were big fans of A Minecraft Movie, and its box-office success clearly made an impression on Dunst: “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?”
Well, your moment has arrived, Kirsten Dunst. Variety reports she’s aboard the as-yet-untitled Minecraft sequel, which will again be directed and co-written by Jared Hess. So far there’s no word on who she might be playing, what the story might be, or how much of said story will involve chicken jockeys or other Minecraft fan service. But we do know the movie is slated to release on July 23, 2027.
