James Gunn Teases What ‘Superman’ Follow-Up ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Will Be About

James Gunn fulfilled a dream today, calling his appearance on The Howard Stern Show “one of the greatest days of my life.” The interview with Stern covered many aspects of his career, including Superman, Peacemaker, the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and his role as the co-head of DC Studios. It’s a fun, informative segment—well worth tuning in if you have SiriusXM access—but the most newsworthy nugget came during a brief discussion of Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow.

When Gunn announced Man of Tomorrow September 3 (on social media, in keeping with his perpetually online lifestyle), it came with artwork of Superman and Lex Luthor. Stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult also posted artwork featuring their characters. So we knew Superman and Lex would be reuniting in what was previously specified as not being Superman 2.

To Stern, Gunn did call it “the Superman sequel,” noting, “We’re starting to shoot in April or so.”

He also said, “We released the fact that we’re coming out with Man of Tomorrow last week; it’s going to be out in two years in theaters, on July 9th of 2027, which is relatively a short time between sequels because we knew immediately where we were going. And it is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. And it’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”

“I loved working with Nick Hoult, who played Lex; I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, sadly, so I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. Oh man, I just love the script so much; I’m excited for people to see the movie.”

He also touches on 2026’s Supergirl (“We’re editing it right now … The movie is coming out fantastic. Milly Alcock, who plays Supergirl, might be the best bit of casting I think I’ve ever done in my entire life. I think she’s absolutely stunning in the movie”) and Clayface (a hard-core, R-rated body horror film”), among other current and upcoming projects.
