‘It’s Kill or Be Killed’ in the World of Ridley Scott’s Apocalyptic New Movie

It’s been a good week for Ridley Scott fans so far, between the news that the legendary director is making a Treasure Island movie with Hugh Jackman and this new trailer for The Dog Stars. Scott’s apocalyptic sci-fi film released an earlier trailer that kept things pretty mysterious; this latest drop offers a few more hints about what life is like for a group of peaceful survivalists (is that a banjo?) amid a world that is literally, as Josh Brolin’s character puts it, “kill or be killed.”

And speaking of that world, we get a better glimpse at the attacking forces of what look like feral humans, made even creepier with the help of green night vision. Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong, and Guy Pearce also star.

Described in a press release as “a riveting, epic thriller set in a world where survival is instinct, but humanity is a choice,” The Dog Stars is based on the book by Peter Heller. Mark L. Smith (Twisters, The Revenant) wrote the screenplay, which “tells the story of Hig (Elordi), a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley (Brolin), has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal postapocalyptic world. But when Hig receives a mysterious radio transmission, he ventures into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exist.”

We’re still a little in the dark about this one, but the combined power of talent involved is enough to make us more than a little intrigued. Scott hasn’t directed a sci-fi feature since 2017’s Alien: Covenant, which in and of itself renders The Dog Stars a noteworthy occasion. It hits theaters August 28.
