And on his death bed, with his final breath, the film fan said five final words: “Nosferatu, in theaters Christmas Day.”
A joke, of course, but something Focus Features is taking seriously as it just announced its second tie-in coffin for the upcoming Robert Eggers vampire film, starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin. This one is an actual coffin you can bury someone in if you so choose, which is different from the previously announced one which was more of a prop replica from the film. What we find funny about this though is that the actual coffin, which seems much more important, is far less expensive than the prop replica. The real coffin is $4,000, the fake one is $20,000.
The real coffin comes from Titan Caskets which designed a ” one-of-a-kind casket inspired by the haunting aesthetic and rich storytelling of this highly anticipated movie.” It’s “designed specifically for fans of the film and those drawn to gothic elegance, this casket blends Titan Casket’s renowned quality with cinematic artistry, capturing the eerie yet sophisticated essence of the movie,” according to the press release. Here’s another image.
Then, of course, we’ve already covered the previous coffin which is not really a coffin, it’s a prop replica of the Count’s coffin in the movie, as well as a bed. And, to be honest, you can see why one costs five times more than the other. The bed is much more elaborate. It just, you know, isn’t designed to be buried in the ground like the other one. Here’s another image to refresh your memory.
io9 spoke to Nosferatu director Robert Eggers last week and the full interview will be up soon. But, when we spoke, we asked him what he would say to someone who bought a Nosferatu coffin. He kind of chuckled, thought, and then said “Congratulations.”
Nosferatu—which also has a coffin-shaped popcorn bucket, the most budget-friendly option for anyone in need of a macabre souvenir—is in theaters on Christmas Day. Find out more about the real coffin at this link.
