Star Trek‘s present TV era was already known to be winding down. Amid a corporate regime change that has a greater interest in bringing the sci-fi franchise back to the big screen, the two remaining series in the Paramount+ stable have also made their endpoints known. Strange New Worlds, which has its fourth season arriving this year, will end after a shortened fifth season; Starfleet Academy, which just wrapped up its debut season, will return for just one more installment before bidding farewell.
However, despite Star Trek‘s feature-film longings—with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves filmmaking duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley the latest names to come aboard the project—fans still held out hope that maybe Trek might still announce a fresh title for the small screen. After all, Star Trek got its start in series form, and the robust new era ushered in with Discovery (and Picard, Short Treks, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy) meant viewers have lately gotten used to tons of new content dropping on Paramount+.
But now, it seems the harvest really is drying up. Though there was recently renewed excitement that Star Trek: Year One, pitched as a follow-up to Strange New Worlds that would chart Captain James T. Kirk (played in younger form by Paul Wesley) during his earliest days in the captain’s chair, might actually happen, well, here’s apparent confirmation that the idea is dead on the vine.
As posted by Trek Central on X, the sets for the Canada-shot Strange New Worlds (which would presumably have been reused for Year One) and Starfleet Academy are in the process of being disassembled. The second post also notes that “pieces from the set” will be sold off, though there are no further details beyond this upcoming auction post.

On top of this distressing physical evidence of the end times, there’s still the odd fact that while both Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy may have completed their production forever, they aren’t gone from TV sets yet. We don’t envy the cast and crews of both series, now placed in the position of having to hype brand-new seasons of their shows under the shadow of the franchise’s increasingly uncertain future.
