Into Infinity’ Says a Black Mirror Trilogy Could Happen

As soon as we streamed “USS Callister: Into Infinity” in the just-released new season of Black Mirror, we wondered when the next installment would be coming. The Netflix series’ first sequel episode is a highlight of season season, and creator Charlie Brooker—who had long wanted to continue the “Callister” story after the 2017 original episode—has said he’d be open to doing more sequels. Or maybe… Black Mirror‘s first three-quel?

More hopeful crumbs for fans: director Toby Haynes, who helmed both “Callister” entries, isn’t ruling out another return to the “Callister” world. As Brooker has said, the idea of a “Callister” spin-off series was floated until it was decided to make it part of Black Mirror‘s seventh season. And like the original episode, it’s an extra-long entry; “Into Infinity” runs just under 90 minutes.

“One film is a sequel. It’s not a series, and it kind of elevates the whole thing into the perfect format for a sci-fi adventure,” Haynes told the Hollywood Reporter. “We could be making our own, I’d like to say, iconic sci-fi trilogy within the Black Mirror world. And what could be better? It’s so exciting. If we do another one! I’d like to make good on the trilogy.”

He continued. “This was our chance to do Empire Strikes Back or Aliens or even Terminator 2. If we were going to come back, how do we upgrade? There are so many sequels that miss the mark in sci-fi, but there are a few that really hit the mark. How do we be the ones that really justify a sequel by making it bigger, better, more exciting, funnier, more emotional, upgrade the effects. Everything was a huge amount of pressure to try to deliver something special.”

Head to THR to read the full interview with Haynes, which digs more into why the series was scrapped, as well as the production of “Into Infinity” (with spoilers, so be careful if you haven’t watched yet). He also talks about his forays into both the realms of Star Wars (he directed several episodes of Andor season one) and Star Trek (he’s actively involved in a prequel project).

Season seven of Black Mirror is now streaming on Netflix.
