It turns out Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is only the close of this current chapter of the blue blur’s adventures with his friends. The announcement of a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 comes as no surprise if you’ve seen Paramount Pictures’ latest installment in the Sonic franchise. To tip toe around it, let’s just say fans will be happy with the direction things are going, if the two end-credit scenes are any indication.
Cute Chao image to raise awareness that we want them to be real, but also to hide the spoilers below:
Okay, we’re safe here to unpack the end-credits scenes from Sonic 3 and just what they mean for the future of the Sonic movies.
In the mid-credits scene, Sonic is once again racing his bros but ends up going to far into the woods. It’s nighttime and eerie when he’s all of a sudden attacked by Metal Sonic. This Sonic impostor is known in the games for being created by Robotnik, who in the movie had just sacrificed himself to save humanity. So this metal hedgehog and his metal Sonic army currently have origins unknown—unless of course, Ivo survived and sent these robots in order to rekindle their feud across the stars. The timeline feels very tight for that unless we’re getting into timey-wimey fun.
And who arrives to save the day? None other than Amy Rose, complete with hooded robe and magical staff. Based on the out-of-this-world third-act boss battle and the chaos emeralds being scattered across the galaxy, we think Team Sonic is about to embark on a space adventure with Amy Rose.
The second end-credit scene reveals that after the giant blast, Shadow survived. Which makes us think maybe Eggman survived too. A part of me wonders if the introduction of Shadow’s mini black hole powers came into play here, as they were introduced when Team Sonic was almost sucked into one earlier in the film. Maybe he unleashed one to transport himself and Eggman to realms unknown. In any case, we’re glad we’re getting more Shadow the Hedgehog. We’ll see what’s next when Sonic the Hedgehog 4 arrives in 2027.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now in theaters.
